Alton House, Poole

Project Information

This scheme on Alton Road in Poole was originally a single dwelling on a large but difficult plot. Our application was to demolish the existing dwelling and take advantage of some of the height available on the site. The sloping site and tall neighbouring properties ensured there was scope to go to 4 storeys. The design of the dwellings maximised views, floor area and amenity space. The look was contemporary, but with a nod to the local setting and clad in Purbeck stone and render.

Blackmore House. Sturminster Newton

Project Information

The original 1960 pre-fab house was purchased due to its excellent location and 360-degree views over the black more hills. Our clients wanted to introduce a new highly insulated contemporary home using an extensive range of renewable energy technologies, whilst incorporating balconies and large expanses of glazing to take advantage the extensive views.  The sites curtilage is split between residential use and agricultural land where we plan to form a large wildlife pond and wild flower meadows protecting the site bio-diversity.

Bower House. Bournemouth

Project Information

This project required some sensitive designs to complement the existing home set within a conservation area.  The rear extensions and remodel of the interior create a contrast between the 1930s built cottage to the front and the contemporary addition to the rear utilising the split-level topography of the site.  The home sees the introduction of a garden room at the lower floor level to ensure all amenity space is easily accessed.  The existing building was in very poor condition, so a full internal remodel was needed to get the building up to standard. Due to constraints of the conservation team, the existing walls to the side of the property were retained and formed part of the new contemporary addition. Aluminum for windows and fascia enable a nice juxtaposition between old and new whilst the creation of a balcony to the rear creates usable outside space on the entry level.

Our client came to dot with planning permission already granted on this site. It was agreed to take the permission and try to tweak some of the design elements to create a more desirable development whilst putting together the working drawing package. Our aim was to get more natural light into some of the more difficult bedrooms, so large courtyard gardens were created. Sea views were possible from all the top floor rooms, and even through the house from the back garden!

Project Information

Dot were approached to redevelopment this site after numerous failed applications and solutions from other practices. Our approach was far more sympathetic to what had been previously suggested, keep the main building and convert – this was made possible by removing the central core to the building. This helped create an internal courtyard with which all the first-floor flats could share. The development was used as the central point to the regeneration of Boscombe, with the Police Station and community centre taking the commercial elements.

Ingestra, Camden

Project Information

This site was a redundant care home in the centre of a former council estate. The care home was in need of repair and as such we appraised the site as potential for residential redevelopment. The scheme was to flank two sides with more affordable flats, and on the front and rear, have banks of family homes, with first floor level gardens, and underground parking. No doubt, homage was paid to the wonderful ‘Chimney Pot Park’ by Urban Splash.

Ringwood Methodist Church

Project Information

Dot were asked to put proposals forward for this site with the client under the impression that the church would need to be demolished. Our proposal was to retain the church and convert into three dwellings, along with a small block of flats and then a mixture of family/starter homes. The use of large picture windows and modern proportions, but with more locally apparent materials, means that the vernacular setting created a development that was in keeping, whilst being of its own time and character.

Slate House, Bournemouth

Project Information

This site was home to four garages used for storage. Dot were approached to design a house that was first and foremost suitable for the clients young family needs. Socialising, entertaining and integrating outside and inside were paramount to the site. Due to the constraints of the site, it was agreed that two large ‘underground’ gardens enabled basement living that was in no way dark and dingy, but in fact very light, and exciting to use. Each bedroom has direct access to outdoor space, where the clients have climbing walls, secret gardens and outdoor cinema walls.
